What does “Harvard-style” mean?

It describes a straightforward resume with clearly labeled sections and concise descriptions of your work. The layout gives a reader a predictable path through your qualifications, without decorative elements competing with the information.

Harvard's career guidance recommends specific, active, factual language, consistent formatting, and recent experience first within each section. It also encourages checking that the layout survives conversion to PDF. See the Harvard College guide to creating a strong resume for the university's own advice and resources.

Veritas CV is an independent resume builder. This is an original example inspired by that approach, not an official Harvard template. Veritas CV is not affiliated with or endorsed by Harvard University.

An original resume example

This fictional early-career applicant has useful evidence from a part-time role and a student organization. Notice how each bullet names a piece of work. Replace every detail with your own experience; the example is a writing reference, not content to copy into an application.

Fictional people, organizations, and achievements. This shortened example illustrates content structure; your editor preview controls the final layout.

Decide what each section needs to prove

Before entering anything, choose a real role you want to apply for and collect the details you can support. You do not need an impressive-sounding item for every field. A focused description of a small project is more useful than a vague claim about leadership.

  • Contact: use an email you check and links that help someone assess your work. Open each link before adding it.
  • Education: identify your qualification and dates. Include coursework or projects when they help explain your preparation for the role.
  • Experience: include paid work, internships, or relevant practical work. Give the organization, your role, dates, and specific contributions.
  • Leadership and activities: explain what you organized, produced, or supported. A title alone does not explain your contribution.
  • Skills: list tools and capabilities you can discuss honestly. Describe language proficiency accurately.

Put the most relevant evidence where a reader will encounter it early. A recent graduate may lead with education; an experienced applicant may prefer work experience first. Veritas CV lets you reorder its resume sections so the structure can follow your priorities.

Make the work concrete without inventing results

A useful drafting pattern is action + specific work + purpose or supported result. Start by writing down what you actually did, who used it, and what evidence you have. Numbers can describe scope; they do not always need to be percentages or revenue.

Fictional rough notes

I collected attendance sheets from three programs and made the weekly report for the coordinators.

A clearer bullet using the same facts

Consolidated attendance records from three programs into a weekly report for program coordinators.

The rewrite does not claim time savings or improved attendance because the notes do not establish either result. If you lack a reliable metric, describe the deliverable and its purpose. Review AI suggestions with the same standard before keeping them.

Turn your notes into your own resume

  1. Open the Veritas CV resume editor. Add your contact details and the sections that apply to you.
  2. Enter one role at a time. Start with a few factual bullets, then remove repetition and details that do not help explain your fit.
  3. Review the live preview. Look for long lines, uneven sections, spelling mistakes, and missing dates. Reorder sections if the strongest evidence is buried.
  4. Check the application instructions. When you are ready for a PDF, choose a download plan and inspect the exported document before sending it.

Questions about Harvard-style resumes

Can I download this template for free?

You can build and preview a resume in Veritas CV for free. Downloading a PDF requires a paid plan. The example on this page is a public writing reference.

Do I need to have attended Harvard?

No. “Harvard-style” refers to the format and approach. Enter your actual school, qualifications, and experience; the builder does not require a Harvard affiliation.

What if I have little work experience?

Use relevant coursework, projects, volunteering, or activities to show practical contributions. Explain your own work clearly and label each role accurately rather than presenting a class project as employment.
